A Brief History of TLCat:
Members, Their Holdings and “Go Live” Dates

Initial participants and their holdings presented by Nelda Bravo, Director of the National Transportation Library, to the Transportation Research Board’s LIST Committee. 

These libraries were the “Charter Members” of TLCat (previously called Transcat), which was functional for the first time on March 22, 2004, and announced as being “live” on April 1, 2004. Note: Although Nebraska DOT, National Transportation Library, and U of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies (in red) were initial participants, they did not enter the TLCat database in January 2004.

Holdings for some Canadian libraries began to appear in TLCat.  A group of 5 Canadian transportation libraries started a new shared catalog comparable to TLCat.  Shaun Moran, Director for the Transport Canada Library, organized this group services project called TransCat Plus.  Member libraries are:

TransCat Plus asked OCLC to add the combined holdings of TLCat to their group services catalog, which OCLC did for free.  TLCat decided to reciprocate, using a new “scope” called “Transportation Libraries (Canada)”.

The following libraries appeared in TLCat for the first time:

Oregon DOT, which was already a member of OCLC, joined TLCat as a result of its participation in a pooled fund study drafted by Wisconsin DOT.  Eleven libraries participated in the initial phases of the pooled fund study.  Of those, KS, MN, MT, OH, WA, and WI were also already members of both OCLC and TLCat. 

LA and MRUTC were not yet members of either OCLC or TLCat.  OR, PA and TN were members of OCLC but not TLCat (note, PA and TN had OCLC symbols, but TN had no holdings and PA had only 1 item record, effectively they were inactive members). 

Finally, OR was a member of OCLC but not TLCat.   The first time their holdings began showing up in TLCat was March 31, 2006.

Note: the holdings of AKDOT represent a scoped version of the holdings of ESO, both collections reside at the Geophysical Institute in Fairbanks.  AKDOT will supercede the participation of ESO as its DOT holdings are distinguished.
