Fixed Fields Mappings
Fixed fields have no indicators or subfield codes; the data elements are positionally defined.
- Leader -- Fixed field that comprises the first 24 character positions (00-23) of each bibliographic record and consists of data elements that contain numbers or coded values that define the parameters for the processing of the record. Character positions 20-23 comprise the Entry map for the Directory. They contain four one-character numbers that specify the structure of the entries in the Directory.
- 006 - Fixed-Length Data Elements - Additional Material Characteristics -- Eighteen character positions (00-17) that provide for coding information about special aspects of the item being cataloged that cannot be coded in field 008 (Fixed-Length Data Elements).
- 007 - Physical Description Fixed Field -- Special information about the physical characteristics in a coded form
- 008 - Fixed-Length Data Elements -- Forty character positions (00-39) that provide coded information about the record as a whole and about special bibliographic aspects of the item being cataloged. The definition of character positions 18-34 was done independently for each type of material.
